Running - will it be my new year fad?

For the first time ever, I took myself for a run last night. It felt pretty good - even for someone like me who HATES to run.. Here are my thoughts on how to make running easier for the non-runner.

Hopefully by putting this into writing I won’t be able to slack off and Ill have to keep going for my runs!

1. Decide where and how far you are going to run before you start - This way you cant get sick of it and decide to just go home - make it an interesting loop and start with something fairly flat

2. Start off with a decent walk… for the first km or so…. This gets your heart rate up and makes it much easier to keep jogging when you start

3. Go on your own - this means you don’t have to talk to anyone which makes you loose your breath, it also means you can set your own pace and you don’t realise how slow you are compared to a normal runner! haha

4. Bring ipod - music can really motivate you and I think it makes it way more enjoyable

5. Think of going for exercise as a present to yourself, not a punishment - sounds ridiculous for people like me who hate to run but seriously - thinking that you’re doing something good for yourself is easier to do than when you think you’re punishing yourself

6. Set goals throughout the run - like getting to a milestone you can see ahead or know of… Then keep a fast walk between the running patches

7. Pick a time of day that suits you and then make sure you force yourself (especially in the first week) to go every day at that time. I like night time because its nice and cool

8. Tell someone else (or the world) that this is going to be part of your routine from then on - this way you have someone/many people to shame you when they ask you how your running is going if you stop doing it!!
